How to Select Fitted Sheets for your Mattress
Bed sheet lingo can be complicated. There are quilts, duvets, coverlets, shams, comforters, flat sheets, and fitted sheets. We wanted to share our knowledge on fitted sheets, since everyone uses this type of bedding.
Fitted sheets are the bed sheets that literally fit over the mattress.
Despite their name, fitted sheets might pop off your mattress if too snug. With mattresses coming in all shapes and sizes, it might be difficult to find the fitted sheet that suits your bed. The key is to do a little bit of measuring and coordinating to the proper bed sheet set. Here is our how to on how to properly size your fitted sheets.
Measure and Size
You will want to physically measure the height of your mattress. This can be done with a simple tape measurer. It is important to not just measure the sides, but try to measure from the tallest point of the mattress.
Next, when shopping for fitted sheets, most manufacturers will have the mattress height listed. This might also be termed as pocket depth. For sizing, the number will fit any size or under mattress. For example, a 12” pocket depth sheet will work with a mattress with a 12” or smaller height. There are also deep pocket fitted sheets, which typically refer to a mattress between 13” and 17” height.
Other Things to Consider
Aside from the correct sized bed sheet, here are other things to consider when selecting your fitted sheet.
Thread Count
Thread count numbers relate to the number of horizontal and vertical threads a sheet has per square inch. Low thread counts mean poorly made sheets that will likely get holes, while very high thread counts are not as breathable. The National Sleep Foundation recommends a thread count between 200 – 400 for optimal comfort and coolness.
Material
Cotton is by far the most preferred material for your sheets. This is because it is a strong, breathable fabric that allows moisture and heat to pass through, meaning you won’t have a sweaty and sticky bed. Not all cotton is created equal. We prefer 100% organic cotton, as it is free of pesticides that can be harmful to our skin and the environment.
Mattress Topper
If you have a memory foam or down mattress topper over your mattress, you might need a larger fitted sheet. This will make up for the additional thickness to your mattress, making sure things stay snug and secure.
With those helpful tips, you can feel confident about finding the right fitted sheet for your bed, saving you stress and hassle. Happy shopping!
